South Korea is aiming to rival its neighbours, China and Japan, by launching its own ice festival.
The Alpensia Resort on Korea’s east coast is currently hosting its own ice sculpture event, which it says is a replica of the famous Harbin Ice & Snow Festival in China. Japan also hosts the annual Sapporo Snow Festival.
Ice artists from Harbin have visited Korea to replicate the Chinese festival’s ice sculptures, with works including Rome’s Colosseum, Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and Agra’s Taj Mahal, along with Korean landmarks including the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and the nine-story pagoda from the Hwangnyongsaji Temple.
Visitors to the festival will also be able to take part in dog-sled rides, dine at ice restaurants and bars, and ride a merry-go-round made of ice.
Alpensia Resort, which is one of the venues for the Pyeonchang 2018 Winter Olympics, will host the ice festival until 28 February 2016.
