According to Reuters, an EgyptAir mechanic has been arrested on suspicion of planting the bomb on a Russian passenger plane that exploded killing all 224 people on board.
The Egypt government has denied that there is any evidence to suggest the disaster was related to terrorism.
However, sources told the agency that the arrested mechanic has a cousin in Islamic State who had used his relation to help plant a bomb.
Two airport policemen have also reportedly been detained.
“After learning that one of its members had a relative that worked at the airport, Islamic State delivered a bomb in a handbag to that person,” a source told Reuters.
“He was told to not ask any questions and get the bomb on the plane.”
Reportedly another source said two policemen are suspected of playing a role by turning a blind eye to the operation at a security checkpoint.
However, they added that “there is a possibility that they were just not doing their jobs properly”.
IS has already claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was in retaliation of Russian airstrikes.
Passengers in Egyptian airports have recounted how they were given the opportunity to skip security checks for a fee.
