The Maldives will be the Official Partner Country of this year’s ITB Berlin, which takes place next month.
The country is aiming to use the world’s largest travel trade show to showcase its ‘Visit Maldives Year’, which will run throughout 2016 and is aimed at increasing visitor arrivals to 1.5 million.
The Maldives will kick-start ITB 2016 at the CityCube Berlin, with an opening ceremony on the eve of the show. This event will showcase the country’s cultural and historical aspects, with traditional Maldivian Boduberu dances and the country’s cuisine.
The island nation first exhibited at ITB Berlin in 1984 and this year will occupy a large 583m² display area in Hall 5.2. Visitors to the Maldives stand will be able to have their photos taken in Maldivian costumes, taste Maldivian delicacies and win a trip for two to the country.
Spa therapists from the Sun Siyam Iru Fushi resort will also be on hand to offer shoulder and back massages.
“ITB Berlin offers the ideal platform to present our tourism product to the international market,” said Mohamed Adam, deputy managing director of the Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation. “For example, we have a number of events and activities planned throughout ITB that will showcase the destination’s unique selling points and the measures we are taking to conserve the natural environment.
“We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to this leading world travel trade show and introduce them to our Maldivian cultural offering,” he added.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of ITB Berlin, which takes place from 9-13 March.
