A crowdfunding campaign has raised the NZ$2 million (US$1.3m) needed to buy a beach in New Zealand.
The BBC reports that the private coastal stretch, which is located in the South Island’s Abel Tasman National Park, went on sale last year. Since then, more than 36,000 people have signed up to support the campaign to buy the beach, and the crowdfunding effort reached its NZ$2m target in just over three weeks.
“We love our land, every piece, and there is a sadness every time a little piece leaves our care,” one of the campaigners, Duane Major, told the Dominion Post. “We want to be able to pass that on to our children, to care and protect, and give it as a gift to the legacy of New Zealand.”
The beach covers seven hectares and features just three small buildings. It is accessible via a nearby air strip.
And last week, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, John Key, said the government could even make a “modest” donation if it were needed.
There is no guarantee that the crowdfunding offer will be accepted however; tenders will be placed by Tuesday afternoon and it is not known whether there are any competing bids.
The beach is located at Awaroa, on the north coast of New Zealand’s South Island, about an hour’s drive from Nelson.
