A new luxury resort company has opened its first property, and is now promising to bring a new style of Chinese hospitality to the world.
Wei Retreat is the brainchild of Philip Wei, a former Banyan Tree, AccorHotels, IHG and Shangri-La executive. Launching his own boutique hotel brand, Wei is planning to break free of the shackles of global chain hotels and pioneer a “new style of experiential hospitality for discerning Chinese and international travellers seeking tranquillity, rejuvenation and luxury”.
“China now has many great luxury resorts, but they are largely western in origin and character. Wei Retreat is a luxury experience meeting the expectations of local and international luxury travellers, but distinctively Chinese, unlike any other luxury resort on the market,” Wei said.
“We promise elegant luxury and boutique service inspired by the orient and the values of our heritage, providing an exquisite experience and overwhelming sense of welcome for a new form of hospitality that draws from our culture and tradition, offering a sense of peace, tranquillity and rejuvenation.
“The most important experience is a sense of belonging that gives a break; not just for physical self, but also mind and soul. It is elegant yet eloquent, traditional yet modern with quiet, subtle luxury, and friendly, down-to-earth and approachable.”
The company’s first property, Wei Retreat Tianmu Lake, has opened in a lakeside setting in a nature reserve in Jiangsu province. Located 2.5 hours from Shanghai, the new resort features just 35 rooms in a collection of low-rise traditional Chinese-style buildings.
Rooms range from 47-230m² and all feature lake or mountains views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Resort facilities include Chinese and international restaurants, a lounge, spa, and a “meditation and tea room”.
Following the brand’s launch in China, Wei is planning to expand the concept across the country and further afield, to other destinations in Asia, North America and Europe. The company has already secured deals for the Wei Boutique New York, Wei Boutique Tbilisi, Wei Retreat Beijing and Wei Retreat Maldives.
