Chinese cruise passengers will be offered a world-first next year, when Norwegian Cruise Lines unveils the first ever onboard go-karting track.
Go-kart company RiMO Supply revealed on Friday that it has been tasked with arguably its most unusual project to-date; creating a full go-karting track on the decks of the brand new Norwegian Joy cruise ship.
The 3,900-passenger vessel, which is being designed specifically for needs of the Chinese market, is currently under construction in Germany. The 230-metre-long racetrack will be located on decks 18 and 19, and will come equipped with 20 karts, a viewing platform, a covered pit lane, workshop, storage room, timing system and even floodlights.
And passengers need not worry about creating clouds of smoke – the karts being supplied to Norwegian are all electrically-powered.
RiMO Supply revealed that special karts will have to be designed to work “under the unique conditions of intensified UV and saltwater exposure that exist onboard a cruise ship”.
“All karts are being constructed according to the highest international standards and the track’s functionality is equal to any high class land-based karting facility – with the addition of an incredible view at 60m height,” the company added.
Norwegian Joy will debut in 2017, operating from the twin Chinese ports of Shanghai and Tianjin. As well as go-karts, the vessel will include an indoor amusement arcade area featuring dodgem cars and simulator rides.
