The Indian government has announced plans to sell 14 out of 16 hotels.
According to the Times of India, which cited Tourism & Culture Minister Dr Mahesh Sharma, the divestment forms part of a strategy to offload government’s stakes in hotels run by the India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). It will retain two key hotels: the Ashok and Samrat in Delhi.
“The process to privatise the 14 hotels has already been started. There are certain issues with the states and we are trying to address them,” Dr Sharma was quoted saying.
ITDC is a public sector organisation which currently runs 16 hotels in Delhi, Patna, Jammu, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Bhopal, Bharatpur, Jaipur, Guwahati, Mysore, Puducherry and Itanagar.
The government had previously divested its stakes in 18 ITDC hotels, bringing down the total number of state-run hotels from 34 to 16.
