Airlines in the Asia Pacific region will need to find a staggering 248,000 new pilots over the next 20 years, according to Boeing’s latest forecast.
In the 2016 edition of its ‘Pilot and Technician Outlook’, which was unveiled this week, Boeing also projects the need for 298,000 new flight attendants and 268,000 technicians. The total of 248,000 pilots marks a significant increase compared to the 226,000 forecast by Boeing in its 2015 outlook.
The US aerospace giant noted that demand in the Asia Pacific region is being driven by the growth of low-cost carriers.
These figures will make Asia Pacific by far the largest global market for aviation training companies over the next two decades. The next biggest market for new pilots is North America, with 112,000 – less than half that of Asia Pacific. Europe (104,000) is third and the Middle East (58,000) fourth.
In terms of cabin crew recruitment however, Europe (169,000) is second behind Asia Pacific, with North America (151,000) third and Middle East (92,000) fourth.
