Many ancient temples in Bagan were damaged by the powerful earthquake that rattled Myanmar on Wednesday.
The Bangkok Post reported an official from Bagan’s cultural department as saying that “about 60 pagodas” were damaged, some of them seriously.
A photo published by the newspaper claims to shows a temple collapsing, with a cloud of brown dust rising high into the sky above the tops of trees and temple spires.
At least one tourist was injured in Bagan when the 6.8-magnitude quake struck.
The epicentre of the tremor was just 30km from the historical site, which dates back to the 10th Century and contains an estimated 2,500 temples. The quake was felt widely across the region, from Bangkok to Kolkata.
