Japan Airlines is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its inaugural flight to New York this autumn, with a series of themed in-flight offerings.
The Japanese carrier’s first ever Tokyo-New York service, operated by a DC-8 aircraft, departed on 12 November 1966 with 52 passengers, 58 invited guests and eight flight attendants onboard.
And to commemorate the anniversary, JAL will serve special meals on its New York-Tokyo flights, including a special American burger, and screen films based in New York and songs linked to the Big Apple on its in-flight entertainment systems.
JAL’s initial New York service operated twice a week, before increasing to five times a week in March 1967, as part of the airline’s first ever round-the-world service.
The airline doubled its Tokyo-New York route from seven to 14 weekly flights on 30 March 2014.
