International visitors to New South Wales spent AU$9.1 billion (US$6.9bn) in the state in the 12 months to 30 June 2016, marking an 18% year-on-year increase and a new record.
According to new data from Tourism Research Australia (TRA), NSW welcomed a total of 3.6 million overseas visitors during the 12-month period, who stayed for almost 87m nights. The expenditure total is more than 35% higher than any other Australian state, while the number of overnight stays is almost 50% higher.
China is the largest source of international visitors to NSW, with 639,000 Chinese visitors travelling to the state in the 12-month period, up 21% year-on-year. There was also double-digit growth in visitors from the US and South Korea, with both markets up 16%.
While the vast majority of travel to the state is concentrated in Sydney, visitation to regional NSW is also on the rise. Areas outside Sydney welcomed 718,200 international visitors in the 12-month period, staying nearly 14m nights. This marks an 11% year-on-year increase.
