Travellers from the UK were issued with the largest number of e-tourist visas for India in September 2016, as the scheme continues to grow in popularity.
According to the latest data from India’s Ministry of Tourism, the UK accounted for 15.5% of the 68,809 e-visas issued to international visitors last month, ahead of the USA (12.4%) and China (9.0%).
Australia (6.0% of the total), Germany (4.8%), France (4.3%), Spain (3.6%), Canada (3.1%), UAE (2.6%) and Malaysia (2.6%) completed the top 10 markets.
More than half of the visas were issued at Delhi Airport (51.7%), followed by Mumbai Airport (21.1%), Bengaluru Airport (6.4%), Chennai Airport (6.3%) and Kochi Airport (3.5%).
The total of 68,809 e-visas issued in September 2016 marked a 117% increase compared to the same month last year, reflecting the recent expansion of the scheme. For the first nine months of 2016, India has now issued a total of 675,302 e-tourist visas, up 235% year-on-year.
