Industry body UKinbound has expressed its disappointment with the decision by Prime Minister Theresa May not to reduce the cost of a two-year multi-entry visa for visitors from India to the UK.
The organisation had lobbied for the introduction of a two-year multi-entry visa for India costing just £87.
Whilst welcoming an extension to the Registered Travellers Scheme and increased access to the Great Club, UKinbound will continue to urge the Government to improve its visa system for India as it did for China last year.
UKinbound’s chief executive, Deirdre Wells OBE, said, “India is the most important of the BRIC economies for tourism and we want to make it as easy as possible to encourage visitors to come here. Just over 400,000 Indians visited the UK in 2015 and spent almost twice the amount of the average visitors. We will lose our competitive edge over other markets if we do not reform our visa regime for this key market.”
Wells said the Chinese visa pilot announced last year had successfully grown visitor numbers “without compromising national security concerns and we believe is an excellent model to grow future business. We therefore strongly urge the Prime Minister to announce a similar scheme for India”.
