The speed of trains on the main railway line connecting Delhi and Mumbai will be increased to 160kph in future.
The Economic Times reported India’s Ministry of Railways as saying that the 1,400km Delhi-Mumbai line would be among 9,000km of key stretches of railway in the country that would have their speed increased. Another confirmed line is the 1,470km line between Delhi and Howrah, West Bengal.
“We have firmed up an action plan to increase the train speed to up to 160km per hour on the total 9000km main trunk routes across the country,” a senior official with the Railways Minister was quoted saying. “To begin with we have started the work on two major busy routes of Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah.”
These projects follow the recent launch of the Gatimaan Express – India’s first semi-high-speed train which runs at 160kph between Delhi and Agra.
The Delhi-Mumbai route carries approximately 90 passenger trains per day.
