Cathay Pacific traffic falls in October

Cathay Pacific carried fewer passengers in October 2016, as Typhoon Haima caused the cancellation of more than 200 flights.
In total, 2.76 million passengers boarded 6,628 Cathay Pacific and Dragonair flights last month, down 2.9% and 1.2% respectively. But while the typhoon was an unavoidable occurrence, Cathay’s general manager for revenue management, Patricia Hwang, called the drop in passenger traffic “a worrying trend”.
“Booking growth [failed] to keep pace with the increase in capacity,” Ms Hwang said. “Reduction in the number of passengers carried on North American routes was a result of softer demand from the USA and other key sales areas. On a brighter note, our premium cabins saw a revenue and load factor improvement.”
Declining traffic was seen in several regions, including North America, mainland China and South Asia & Middle East. Higher traffic was achieved on routes to and from Europe and Southeast Asia.
For the first 10 months of 2016, Cathay Pacific and Dragonair have now carried a total of 28.73m passengers on 65,891 flights, up 1.3% and 0.8% respectively.
