Disney and the Hong Kong government have announced plans for a multi-year expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland.
This proposed US$1.4 billion investment will include new areas based on the popular animated movie ‘Frozen’ and the Marvel characters.
The park’s central castle area will be updated with new day- and night-time entertainment, and a new entertainment venue, Moana’s Village Festival, will open in Adventureland featuring a stage for live shows.
“We are more excited than ever about the future of Hong Kong Disneyland,” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. “This proposed expansion brings the best of the Walt Disney Company to this wonderful tourist destination, giving guests an experience only Disney can deliver and infusing some of Disney’s most beloved characters and stories into this unique destination.”
This latest investment follows a major period of growth at Hong Kong Disneyland. Between 2011 and 2013 it launched three themed areas – Toy Story Land, Grizzly Gulch and Mystic Point – and a new Iron Man Experience is set to open in January 2017.
In addition, the resort’s third hotel, the 750-room Disney Explorers Lodge, will launch in the first half of next year.
Disney and the Hong Kong Government respectively own 47% and 53% of the theme park and the cost of investment will be split along these lines, with Disney investing approximately US$650m in the project and the government injecting US$750m of funds.
