The fifth International Tourism Mart (ITM) has been held in the northeastern state of Manipur.
The event, which is organised by India’s Tourism Ministry as its annual showcase for the northeastern region, ran from 23-25 November 2016 in Imphal, Manipur’s state capital.
Inaugurating the event, Manipur’s Chief Minister Shri Okram Ibobi Singh noted that the timing the ITM, during the 10-day Sangai Festival, would allow the state to showcase its culture and natural heritage. He also stressed the need to develop air connectivity in the state, including bringing international flights to Imphal.
ITM marks the biggest tourism event ever held in Manipur.
India’s Tourism Secretary, Shri Vinod Zutshi, also using the event to affirm the central government’s commitment to the development and promotion of tourism in the northeastern region. He noted that, thus far, the ministry has sanctioned 12 projects worth INR10.7 billion (US$156 million) covering all the eight states.
This fifth ITM welcomed a total of 48 international delegates, comprising tour operators and media from countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Russia, South Africa, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, UAE, UK and USA.
The mart also saw participation from 80 tour operators based in the eight northeastern states and West Bengal, as well as domestic buyers from other parts of the country.
