The Indian Ministry of Tourism has unveiled a plan to develop tourism in a tropical archipelago in the Indian Ocean.
Following a tourism policy initially set out in 2010 for the development of tourism in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the government will now create a similar plan for the Lakshadweep archipelago, which lies off the southwest coast of India, north of the Maldives.
Lakshadweep is a Union Territory of India, and its administration has informed the Ministry of Tourism that it is at an “advance[d] stage of finalising the guidelines” for tourism development in the archipelago.
These plans include the establishment of facilities such as eco-resorts and scuba diving centres, as well as supporting infrastructure. The development will be funded using both public and private investments. Five of Lakshadweep’s islands have been earmarked for development.
The archipelago marks the northernmost of part of an undersea ridge in the Indian Ocean that also creates the Maldives and Chagos Islands.
