P&O cruise passengers caught in storm
P&O Cruises has said it will hold an inquiry following an incident in New Zealand which left passengers more than 40 passengers injured, the New Zealand Herald has reported. The Pacific Sun liner was travelling from Port Vila, Vanuatu, to Auckland which it was struck by 100km per hour winds and huge waves. Passengers described being thrown around the ship, as loose objects crashed around them. Conditions were so severe that a bank of gaming machines was ripped from the wall of the ship’s casino. P&O spokesperson Sandy Olsen commented only that the Pacific Sun had encountered “an unusual set of circumstances”.
The ship was approximately 600km north of Auckland when the incident happened, following an 8-day voyage around the South Pacific islands. The ship was carrying 1732 passengers and 671 crew at the time, with injuries included broken bones, cuts and bruises.
