In a joint initiative with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways is handing out 840 free air tickets to global media representatives and travel companies as part of a major campaign to revive the country’s tourism industry, the Bangkok Post has reported.
The unprecedented handout is part of the Thailand Invitation Mega Familiarisation Trip being launched to reverse negative impacts of Thailand’s recent political unrest.
Despite the situation on the ground in Thailand remaining relatively calm, the state of emergency called on 2 September, along with the closure of several airports by demonstrators, has deterred visitors. In combination with the global economic slowdown, Thailand’s tourism industry has been hard-hit.
The fam trip, scheduled from 8-13 October, has an itinerary of 30 routes, covering northern and northeastern Thailand as well as Phuket and Krabi.
