The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd (COMAC) will call its first large passenger jet, due to roll off the production line in eight years, the C919, Xinhua reported. The plane is intended to compete in the commercial aviation market with industry leaders, Airbus and Boeing.
“C represents China as well as COMAC,” the company’s Chief Designer, Wu Guanghui, was reported saying. “The name also reflects our determination to compete in the international market for jumbo jets. C919 comes after Airbus and Boeing so you will have ABC in the aviation industry,” Wu added.
The first ‘9’ in the name implies ‘forever’ in Chinese culture, while 19 refers to the 190 seats on the large jet, the report added.
