London - base BMT Research have developed a robotic fish with built-in chemical sensors to sniff out aquatic pollutants. According to Rory Doyle, Senior Scientist with the group, “we hope that this will prevent potentially hazardous discharges at sea, as leaks get worse over time if their location is not detected early on”.
A small shoal of three to five of the prototype fish are to be released into the harbour at the port of Gijon off the coast of Spain in 2012. If they test well, we are likely to see the robotic fish patrolling the world’s seas soon.
