(TravMedia.com): In conjunction with the start of the new TV series RAW travel has released two more dates for races in the coming year. The Melbourne based company has run six Amazing race tours to date, with teams of two battling it out across Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in a simulation of the competitive thrills of the TV Series.
But according to RAW Travel’s Dave Reynold’s their race “is a lot less cut throat and with a lot more emphasis on enjoying the incredible locations and having fun, rather racing between airport terminals”. Like the TV series contestants must race in teams of two and are given a series of challenges to solve in each place that they stay in, as well as racing other teams between different locations on the journey.
The activities that racers might find themselves doing involve a mixture of cerebral, social and physical skills that don’t favour any one particular skill set. There is an emphasis on interaction with locals and racers “must be prepared to step right out of their comfort zone”.
Lisa Pink was a participant on RAW’s last Amazing race and summed up the experience as “The Amazing Race is more than a competition…it immerses you into the communities and culture, popping that bubble that most tourist like to hide behind, and allowing you to experience so much more”
Daily points are awarded to the first team past the post each day and there are extra points for country stage winners. To keep the race from becoming predictable ‘wild cards’ are given that can catapult one team ahead of another.
Racers find themselves using a variety of local transport on a boat up the Mekong, pedalling a bicycle through Cambodian villages, riding an elephant, or racing a tuk-tuk through the streets of Bangkok. The winner gets $1000 prize money but it’s all about the fun and experiences along the way.
Another race participant Suzanne Ryan summed up her experience: “This was no ordinary holiday. It was a full on adventure that was all about interacting with the local people and allowed me to learn about their lives and their country. It was a life changing experience that has left me filled with gratitude”.
RAW Travel’s Amazing race will depart Saigon on November 22- December 01 2009 and travel through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Highlights of the race include Ho Chi Minh city, the Mekong Delta, a cross- border boat ride up the Mekong river, the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, the ancient Temple city of Angkor Wat & Siem Reap, and an exciting finish line in the bustling capital of Bangkok.
RAW Travel are planning their eigth and final Amazing race in February 14-24 2010.
Cost is $2490 per person for 11 days, excluding International flights.
