The official opening of The Westin Hotel & Spa, Abu Dhabi, will take place on 1 September, one month later than originally planned, Klaus Niefer, the hotel’s general manager, has confirmed. The golf resort hotel will be the hospitality heart of the Abu Dhabi Golf Club – a 27 hole championship course, home to the PGA European Tour Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.Abu Dhabi has reported a 10 percent rise in hotel guests in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year with increases also recorded for guest nights, occupancy levels, revenue and length of stay. This news comes following reports that an oversupply of hotel rooms in Abu Dhabi is expected to reduce soft occupancy rates even further in the Gulf emirate during the next two years.”Occupancy is expected to further soften with additional hotel openings planned over the next two years,” property consultancy Jones Lang Lasalle said in its quarterly report on Abu Dhabi real estate.Nonetheless, according to the latest figures released recently by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, some 510,114 guests stayed in Abu Dhabi’s hotels in the first three months of this year, producing 1.56 million guest nights, up by a quarter on the same period last year.Talking exclusively to TDME, Niefer said: “Naturally we’re very excited and Abu Dhabi represents an opportunity for us to further expand in the UAE and our successes in Asia will help us considerably to raise our visibility here.”The hotel itself will have 172 rooms with the standard size being about 45 sq metres. There will be a number of suites and all guest rooms will face over the golf course.
