Tourist spending during the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Sale 2011’ jumped 51% year-on-year, according to the latest data from Visa. The payment card giant reported that spending on foreign Visa cards reached THB7 billion (US$235 million) in the first month of the retail event, led by shoppers from Japan, Australia and the US. The top spending categories, excluding airfares and accommodation, were jewellery, hospitals and duty-free.
Somboon Krobteeranon, Visa’s Country Manager for Thailand, said; “This is a great boost for Thailand’s retail and tourism sectors. Despite some concerns that there could be a downturn this year in line with ongoing regional and global economic uncertainty, this shows the resilience of the sector, the attraction of the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale and the great promotions we have worked together with our partners to design and deliver.”
Visa has been working with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on a series of promotions for this year’s event, including the chance to win a THB1 million gift voucher.
Top 10 contributors to visitor spending in Thailand during the first month of the Grand Sale were: Japan, Australia, US, UK, Singapore, South Korea, UAE, Hong Kong, France and China.
