Local politicians and environmental activists have rejected government plans to build a new railway on the Indonesian territory of Kalimantan. The Russian funded, 135km railway will connect Central and East Kalimantan as stakeholders look to facilitate coal distribution. Opponents say the railway will run through protected forest areas and water catchment areas which may threaten the safety of people living alongside the Barito and Mahakam rivers. Activists are also concerned about the proliferation of mining activities in the area.
