Barcelona and Argentina footballer Lionel Messi has been revealed as the global brand ambassador of Turkish Airlines.
The announcement, which was made at a press conference today at Barcelona’s Nou Camp Stadium, was made after an initial agreement was signed in September 2012.
Messi will join Lakers star Kobe Bryant and tennis’ Caroline Wozniacki – both having been brand ambassadors since 2011 and 2010 respectively.
“I would like to thank to Turkish Airlines because it’s a great honour for me to be the brand ambassador of such a fast growing, among the world’s biggest, and Europe’s best airline company” said Messi. “I believe that by joining with a global network company such as Turkish Airlines, we will set to sign many more successful projects. As an Argentinean, I am happy Turkish Airlines is having another destination –Buenos Aires from Istanbul.”
Messi has already shot an advert for Turkish Airlines alongside Bryant where he vies for the attention of a young boy. The ad will air later worldwide late this year.
“We have held the title of Europe’s best airline now for two consecutive years and it makes perfect sense that we align ourselves with the best and most recognisable sports figures in the word,” said Turkish Airlines Member of the Board, İsmail Gercek. “Signing a global sports star like Messi only solidifies our leading position as one of the world’s fastest growing airlines flying to a record number of countries across the globe.”
Turkish Airlines now flies to 92 countries and has recently added its 200th aircraft.
