More than 82,000 hotel rooms were added to the Asia Pacific’s inventory in 2012.
According to the latest data from STR Global, the region saw the opening of 458 new hotels last year, comprising 82,476 rooms. The upscale sector accounted for the largest number of new rooms (17,050) followed by upper-upscale segment (15,463) and economy (14,194). The midscale segment saw the opening of 7,253 new rooms, ahead of the upper-midscale segment with 7,031 rooms.
A further 1,767 hotels with 385,113 rooms are still at various stages of planning and development in the Asia Pacific region, according to STR Global.
