Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has signed a new codeshare with Myanmar Airways International (MAI).
Effective 15 February 2014, the deal will allow MAS to place its ‘MH’ code on MAI’s five weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Yangon, giving it a total of 19 weekly flights on the route. MAI meanwhile, will place its ‘8M’ code on the Malaysian carrier’s services from KL to Singapore, Langkawi, Bangkok and Penang.
“Malaysia Airlines has always supported and contributed tremendously towards the continuous growth of Myanmar Airways International,” said MAI’s managing director, Si Thu. “Air KBZ, MAI’s sister airline, can facilitate customer’s onward travel from Yangon to domestic destinations in Myanmar.
“Signing this codeshare agreement reopened a new chapter in the relationship between Malaysia Airlines and Myanmar Airways International. We hope that this will enhance the traffic between two countries and beyond”, he added
Ahmad Jauhari, group CEO of MAS, said the tie-up with MAI formed part of the company’s “initiative towards enhancing air connectivity with key priority markets overseas for increased tourist arrivals into Malaysia”.
The deal marks a resumption of a previous MAS-MAI codeshare agreement, which was suspended in 2010 due to economic sanctions against Myanmar.
