Just days after taking up the mantle of Civil Aviation Minister, Vayalar Ravi has called for patience, saying it will take time to turn around the fortunes of the national carrier.
It was Ravi’s stated ambition to restore Air India as the pride and glory of the world’s second fastest growing economy, but he told media yesterday that it will be tough to turn the tide in a short period.
“There is no doubt that there are issues because things have not fallen in place as they should have following the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines.
I have decided that before I start to do anything, I will have discussions with all stakeholders, ranging from the various unions besides the cabin crew, pilots guild, the finance sections and others,” Ravi told TOI.
There are indeed many issues to address if things are to improve.
There’s the issue of staff and aircraft shortages, the cost of running non-profitable routes under its responsibility of national carrier, debt restructuring and some ugly profit and loss accounts to tidy up too.
With this on his plate and more, airport taxes and spot fares to name a couple, Ravi may already be asking if his order is too tall.
