Banyan Tree has opened its first ever Dhawa hotel in Cuba.
The Singapore-based hotel group announced the creation of the new brand back in October 2015, billing it as a “casual and contemporary” full-service hotel concept. And now, more than a year later, it has finally unveiled the world’s first Dhawa hotel in Cayo Santa Maria, an island off Cuba’s north coast.
The opening also makes Banyan Tree the first Asian hotel group to enter Cuba.
The new Dhawa Cayo Santa Maria features a total of 516 rooms and suites, approximately half of which will have sea views. There are also five restaurants, four bars, two swimming pools, two tennis courts, a basketball court, fitness centre, kids’ club and a 545-seat theatre for daily live performances.
The property is accessible via Santa Clara International Airport, a 90-minute drive away, which receives flights from Havana and destinations in North America and Europe.
The resort becomes the first of four hotels planned by Banyan Tree in Cuba, and marks the company’s latest venture in Latin America following two Banyan Tree-branded hotels in Mexico. A new Angsana resort is also expected to open adjacent to the Dhawa resort, and another dual-branded development will see Banyan Tree and Angsana resorts rise in Cayo Buba.
Two other Dhawa hotels are being planned for China, located in the provinces of Hainan and Guizhou.
Dhawa becomes Banyan Tree’s fourth hotel brand, following Banyan Tree, Angsana and Cassia.
