Thailand’s Dusit International has unveiled plans to open multiple hotels across Myanmar, described as the “last frontier market in Asia”.
The company has signed a management deal for a new luxury hotel in Yangon, in addition to the D2 hotel it signed in the city earlier this year. Scheduled to open in 2019, the 338-room Dusit Thani Yangon will be located in Mindhama, an area of the city earmarked by the Myanmar government to become a new business district.
And Dusit’s group CEO, Suphajee Suthumpun, revealed that the Yangon signing is only the start of her company’s expansion plans in Myanmar.
“Myanmar is a fast-emerging market,” Ms Suphajee said. “Being one of the first… hotels within Yangon’s new central business district gives us a great opportunity to showcase our unique brand of gracious Thai hospitality in one of the ASEAN [region]’s largely untapped markets. This should set us up perfectly for further expansion within the country, including key destinations such as Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake.”
The new Dusit Thani Yangon will be located in a major new development area that will also include a large convention centre. As well as its 338 rooms and suites, the hotel will feature multiple F&B outlets, including a rooftop restaurant and bar, plus extensive meeting space including 400-seat ballroom. The hotel is being developed by Myanmar V-Pile Group.
“As Myanmar is the last frontier market in Asia and the hotel and tourism industry is growing very fast, our group is very excited to commence our first phase of the… Mindhama project, which will include the five-star Dusit Thani Yangon together with the new, international standard Myanmar Convention Centre,” said Dr Sone Han, chairman of the Myanmar V-Pile Group.
Dusit announced its entry into Myanmar earlier this year when it signed an agreement for the dusitD2 Residence Yangon, which is due to open next year.
Yangon welcomed 1.3 million international arrivals in 2015, but this is expected to multiply to more than seven million by 2020.
