Do you have a few million dollars to spare? Well if so, you might want to consider a new proposal by the Maldivian government, which has revealed the cost of leasing its idyllic islands and lagoons.
The announcement, made on Wednesday by the Maldives’ Ministry of Tourism, included a series of different island plots, all of which are available on 99-year leases. The most expensive leases are the islands and lagoons in the Alifu Dhaalu, Alifu Alifu and Malé atolls.
For example, a 10-hectare island in these atolls is available for US$6.6 million, but the same sized island plots in seven outlying atolls -Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, Gnaviyani and Seenu – would cost just US$1.25m.
These outlying atolls will also be exempt from “premium fees” of between US$250,000 and US$600,000, which are required in order to build resorts on the prime atolls.
In addition to the islands, lagoons of between 15-50 hectares are also now up for sale, the most expensive of which would cost in excess of US$50m.
