Passenger traffic up 16% at Muscat airport

Passenger traffic through Muscat International Airport rose 16% to 7.5mn in the end of December 2012 compared to 6.4mn passengers for 2011, as reported in Muscat Daily.

According to statistics released by the Air Transport Department at the Public Authority for Civil Aviation, the number of arriving passengers rose 17% to 3.8mn as compared to 3.2mn in the corresponding period last year. The number of passengers flying out also increased 16% to 3.6mn as compared to 3.1mn last year.

The increase in passenger traffic is attributed to introduction of new flights by IndiGo, Ethiopian Airlines and United Airways of Bangladesh, as well as due to an increase in the number of flights operated by Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Sri Lankan Airlines and Turkish Airlines.

The total number of passengers at Salalah Airport rose 23 per cent to 629,305 in the period ending December 2012 as compared to 513,278 in the same period of 2011.
