Royal Caribbean reveals new ship names
Royal Caribbean International has started work on the first of two new cruise ships, and revealed the names of both luxury liners.
Under a development plan named ‘Project Sunshine’, US-based Royal Caribbean has commissioned two new liners to be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The first piece of steel was cut for the first liner this week in a ceremony at the shipyard, and Royal Caribbean has also revealed the names of the two new liners – the Quantum of the Seas, which is set to debut in autumn 2014, and Anthem of the Seas, which will follow in spring 2015.
“We are extremely excited to celebrate this important milestone for our first Project Sunshine ship. After three years of design and advance planning this is the first step of the construction of the ship and I look forward to seeing it all come together in the coming months,” said Royal Caribbean’s president & CEO, Adam Goldstein. “The new ship will be such a leap forward in terms of vessel design and guest experiences that we thought the name Quantum of the Seas was perfectly appropriate.”
The new ships will form part of Royal Caribbean’s new ‘Quantum-class’ of liner – its seventh class, following on from the most recent Oasis class, which included the world’s biggest cruise ships, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. While Royal Caribbean has not revealed details of the new class, it did say that the Quantum ships would offer “unprecedented experiences and features”.
“Throughout our history we have made huge strides in cruise ship design and innovation and the Quantum class will be no exception,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman & CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises. “We look forward to introducing consumers to Quantum cruising.”
Further details about Quantum of the Seas are expected to be announced in the coming months.
