1,000 new Korean rooms for IHG
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed an agreement with South Korea’s Gwangwondo Development Corporation (GDC) to manage three new resort & suite projects in the country. The developments will add close to 1,000 rooms to IHG’s pipeline in Korea doubling the group’s number of hotels in the market.
The Alpensia development project, in which the new properties will be based, is located in the Pyeongchang district of Gangwon-do Province – an established ski resort two and a half hours drive from Seoul. The properties will be; the 236-room InterContinental Alpensia Pyeong Chang Resort, the 182-room Holiday Inn Alpensia Pyeong Chang Resort, and the four-tower, 551-room Holiday Inn Alpensia Pyeong Chang Suites around 551 rooms. All the properties are expected to be completed by Q2 2009.
Jan Smits, IHG’s Chief Operating Officer for Southern Asia and Korea, said; “The signing of these three entities in a single deal is another evidence of that growth and the confidence in South Korea. Our growing portfolio clearly demonstrates that our partners recognise the value of our award-winning brands and have complete confidence in our ability to deliver memorable guest experiences coupled with exceptional business performance.”
IHG already has three hotels in South Korea, with a total of about 1,600 rooms. They are InterContinental COEX Seoul, InterContinental Grand Seoul and Holiday Inn Seongbuk. A fourth, the Holiday Inn Gwangju, is under construction.
