More than 12 million people are expected to take a winter holiday this season, with more heading to beaches and ski slopes.
According to the latest ABTA survey 43% are looking to head on a winter sun break while 18% will head to the mountains for snowsports, up from 40% and 15% shares respectively last year.
Cities breaks have lost out with 35% of respondents, compared to 39% in 2013.
Age groups such as those aged between 25-34 and over 65 are most likely to take a winter holiday, with popular destinations including the Canary Islands, Tunisia and Morocco. Further afield favourites include the Maldives, Mexico and Thailand.
For ski and snowboard breaks 39% of those aged 16-24 are most likely to go on this type of trip, favouring resorts in France, Italy, Austria and further east.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive said: “We’ve seen a small increase in the number of people taking three or more holidays a year and it looks like lots of these people will be heading away this winter.”
Snowsports specialist Ski Solutions recently reported a surge in bookings.
Managing director Craig Burton said: “Ski Solutions has had an excellent start to the season with bookings up 26% year on year. Like ABTA, we have seen the return of many ‘lapsed-skiers’ who didn’t take a winter sports holiday for several years due to the economic climate. With the economy recovering, many of these skiers are booking a ski holiday for the first time in several years.”
