The post-war land grab in Sri Lanka is ongoing and the latest proposal will see 200 hotels go up along the country’s eastern seaboard in the areas of Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Hambanthota. As visitor arrivals show consistently high year-on-year growth, developers are desperate to cash-in on the tourism boom early. According to the Asia Tribune, the Minister of Youth Affairs Mr Dullas Allahapperuma announced that 200 new hotels and up to 25,000 new rooms will be built on the Eastern coast to cater to the influx of tourists which will hit 2.5 million within the next few years if the government gets its way. But despite public sector enthusiasm, commercial operators are urging the government to focus on niche tourism instead of the terribly destructive mass tourism as it seeks to grab a stake in a multi-billion dollar global industry.
