Al Dhafra festival preps gets underway

The Al Gharbia region is gearing up for the fast approaching Al Dhafra festival. The 15-day festival showcases the Bedouin culture, heritage and history of the Emirate. The event is scheduled to take place from 14-28 December at Madinat Zayed, Al Gharbia (The Western Region).
The festival now in its seventh edition is the biggest gathering of camel owners in the region. Visitors and residents are enlightened on the role of camels in the culture and heritage of the UAE. This year’s festival is expected to attract about 1,500 participants from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Yemen and the UAE and their nearly 25,000 camels.
There will be 12 events during the 15-day celebration namely, the Camel Beauty Contest (Mazayna), the Mahaleb Competition, the Heritage Camel Race, the Camel Auction, the falcon competitions, the Arab Heritage Saluki Race, handicrafts competition in addition to the Dates’ Mazayna, a traditional Market and Children’s Village.
Ayman Ashor, general manager, Tilal Liwa Hotel, said: “Al Dhafra serves as a link between generations. It serves as a good venue for visitors who want to experience and learn the culture and history of the Emirate. We are fortunate to have allocation close to Al Gharbia where most of the events will take place.”
