Virginia’s tourism authorities are using a UK sales mission to promote the state’s music offering to tourists.
The state is hoping to attract younger travellers with the music-themed campaign, which focuses on the opening of the new Birthplace of Country Music Museum in early August.
“We’re hoping to broaden our audience to a younger crowd and the music aficionados who want to come and experience the culture and history that Virginia has to offer,” Diane Bechamps, vice president marketing at Virginia Tourism told Travel Daily. “Bristol is growing to be known as the Birthplace of Country Music and the place to see bluegrass music rooted in gospel, before perhaps heading onto Nashville to see what the modern scene is like today.”
Bechamps said the Virginia state is partnering with neighbouring Tennessee to promote the State Street border although ‘ignoring the borders’ and generating collaboration is key.
“We know that Virginia’s ‘city’ is Washington DC and we work with the Capitol Region as we have also done with New York, so partnering Tennessee for the music tourism along State Street is all about meaning easier access and promoting experiences.”
Mumford and Sons played in Bristol while it is hoped the new museum, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival and its steeped musical history will strike a chord with UK visitors.
A party for tour operators with Bristol-based musicians is taking place London tonight to showcase the culture. The trip will also include a visit to Bristol in the south west of England to expand on the pair’s twinning relationship.
