The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has called for a harder push for sustainability in travel as it launched its nominations for the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards programme.
WTTC president and CEO David Scowsill has urged the industry to put sustainability at the front of everything it does and said companies that are taking the lead in practices should continue to raise the stakes for others.
His comments came as the council announced its Tourism for Tomorrow Awards programme for 2015 which recognises the best in class to inspire others.
“We were one of the first industries to take our responsibilities seriously with regard to sustainability. We know that we have a responsibility for the millions of travellers each year and for the careful preservation of resources and protection of the planet,” said Scowsill. “We also know that we have a responsibility to provide millions of quality jobs to people, who are seeking fulfilment and quality of life through employment. It is important that we learn best practice from each other and that we ensure governments are aware of our achievements.”
Professor Graham Miller from the University of Surrey will lead the judging this year with the awards covering community, destination, environment, innovation, people and sustainable business.
Finalists and winners will be flown out to Madrid for the WTTC Global Summit on 15-16 April 2015.
