Groupe Eurotunnel has put its ferry business up for sale after losing an appeal to carry on operating MyFerryLink services.
The group’s ferry operation will end in six months’ time after the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) agreed with other authorities over Eurotunnel’s share of the UK to France travel market.
The French firm has been in a court battle since acquiring ships from defunct SeaFrance in June 2012 and starting up ferry services between Dover and Calais.
An independent, employee-led group SCOP was set up to run the operation but has not been deemed sufficient to allow the services to continue.
“MyFerryLink is an operating and commercial success. We are proud to have succeeded where so many others have failed. Given the position of the British authorities, the future of MyFerryLink will now be determine outside the Group,” said Jacques Gounon, chairman and CEO of Groupe Eurotunnel.
