THE Australian and Indonesian governments today announced that they will work together to improve Indonesia’s aviation and maritime safety standards under an AUD$24 million aviation and maritime safety package.
The agreement comes in the wake of the Yogyakarta plane crash in Mar in which five Australians died.” This tragedy has galvanisedour two nations into further action to demonstrate to the travelling public of our two nations that safety is a priority for us all”, said Australian transport minister Mark Vaile.
Australia will provide AUD$24million over three years for training and technical assistance to support Indonesia in addressing safety challenges, with a focus on improving the skills of safety regulators, investigators, managers and air traffic service providers.
Information from recent assessments regarding transport safety and results from joint workshops to be held in Indonesia over the next few months will be used to develop a co-ordinate safety program.
