National tourist board VisitEngland has estimated that 4.5 million Brits will take an overnight UK break this bank holiday, roughly 9% of the adult population.
Of that total, 3.5 million will stay in England. The data, which has come from the company’s ‘Bank Holiday Trip Tracker’ has estimated that the bank holiday is likely to generate around GBP1 billion in tourism spend – GBP800 million of which will be spend in England.
“It’s great news that 3.5 million people will be taking an overnight break in England over the August Bank Holiday,” commented Louise Stewart, VisitEngland’s director of strategy and development. “July’s heat wave saw an increase in late bookings and a real boost for the tourism industry after a harsh winter and slow spring.”
The tourist board estimated that a further 7.5 million Brits currently haven’t decided whether they will go away yet. Financial reasons are the main concerns Brits have for not taking a break.
“Those waiting on the weather should remember that England is a fantastic all-weather destination, with a wealth of world-class coastline, countryside and attractions, including many free galleries and museums across the country,” added Stewart. “With warm weather set to continue this weekend, it will certainly provide a secondary boost for many operators at the end of the school holidays, with the expectation being to see another spike in last-minute bookings for the Bank Holiday.”
