Authorities in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu capital have banned urinating and spitting in public places such as roads, pavements, parks, water sources, bridges and commercial areas.
Bernama reported that the Chennai (state capital) Corporation will also introduce an INR50 fine which comes into effect on April. A 300-uniformed squad will also be on the watchout to nab offenders.
Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni was quoted saying that the aim was to create civic awareness among the public who often refused to use public toilets.
“This is not to earn revenue but to make the public aware that such civic offences are undesirable,” he told Bernama.
The corporation would build more public toilets and a mass awareness campaign would be conducted among the people to encourage them to use public amenities.
