Australian aboriginal landowners at Uluru are planning a AU$440 million (US$358 million) bid for the nearby Ayers Rock Resort, The Australian has reported. Communities of Mutitjulu, Imanpa and Kaltukatjara aboriginals have reportedly joined with Sydney-based bank Grant Samuel and former resort MD Wayne Kirkpatrick to purchase the resort from the GPT Group, who put the asset up for sale earlier this year.
Consortium spokesperson, Penny Debelle, said that local people did not currently benefit financially from the resort.
“It is the only place you can stay at the rock,” Debelle told the newspaper. “But the local people aren’t able to have any benefit from the tourism dollar around the rock. This would ensure employment for the local community.”
