City breaks have overtaken beach holidays in popularity for British holidaymakers driven by more flights, stag weekends and the strong pound, according to new ABTA research.
Its latest consumer survey found 42% of Brits took a city break last year while 38% went to the beach.
The 25-34 age group is driving the trend, with half taking a city break, and it is also the age group taking the most holidays in a year at an average of three.
Around 20% of those surveyed also said they had travelled with an adult-only group of friends, with 3.2% of men travelling for a stag party and 1% of women heading overseas for a hen do.
The age group is taking a mixture of UK and overseas trips and the majority still tend to book through laptops of PCs (92%).
Victoria Bacon, head of communications at ABTA said: “Holiday breaks of one to three nights have increased as a signal to the growing popularity of city breaks. The 16-24 year-olds are the most prolific holidaymakers but many of those heading on stag weekends fall in the 25-34 age bracket.”
