Accor has continued its global reforestation project with the launch of a major tree-planting initiative in China.
Under its ‘Plant for the Planet’ environmental programme, the European hotelier has financed the planting of 1,000 trees in Hebei and Yunnan provinces, marking the start of the scheme in China.
More than 1,400 Accor hotels across the world have now joined the Plant for the Planet programme since it was launched in 2009. These hotels are committed to planting one tree for every five towels which are reused, which has so far led to the planting of three million trees worldwide.
Seven Accor hotels in China have already joined the scheme, with others expected to join later in the year.
“Plant for the Planet in Greater China is off to a great start, with 1,000 trees already financed. This represents a joint achievement between our hotels and our guests,” said Paul Richardson, chief operating officer of Accor Greater China. “This initiative will certainly see the participation of more Accor hotels in the Greater China region as we further strengthen our commitment to sustainable development throughout over 130 Accor hotels in China – mitigating our impact on the environment and giving back to our communities.”
Plant for the Planet is just one part of Accor’s broader Planet 21 CSR programme, under which it is targeting a 15% reduction in water consumption and a 10% reduction in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 2015.
