Heart Travel might look like a regular travel agency but it’s actually the first ‘social enterprise’ in this field in Singapore, according to a Straits Times report.
Operating from the heartland of the island-state, it trains needy Singaporeans - without the right qualifications or expertise – to be travel consultants.
The report said Heart Travel hoped these individuals would find work in other travel agencies after about six months on the job.
Said Sam How, general manager of Heart Travel; “We want to provide a comprehensive training ground for these people and help them make a living at the same time.”
Heart Travel was set up in May by Samson Tan, chief executive officer of local agency, GTMC Travel.
According to the report, it was funded by a pool of investors and travel-consultant trainees are paid SG$800 (US$564) a month.
According to Tan and How, they hope to expand Heart Travel to cover five more districts in five years’ time.
