Bhutan is aiming to become an exclusive, preferred destination for culture, nature and wellness tourism in the regional markets of India, Bangladesh & Maldives. The Bhutan Government has implemented multiple initiatives over the last 12 months and the OTA (overall tourist arrivals) hit nearly 41,000 in 2010, an impressive growth of approximately 26% yoy.
A few initiatives have been undertaken with a clear focus to promote Bhutan in the regional markets. The tourism board has participated in SATTE, TTF & OTM and other major trade shows, engaged in web advertising and aggressive social media marketing, developed a microsite featuring short & long haul Bhutan packages and other media advertisement for wildlife holidays, cycling, bird watching, rafting etc.
One maiden initiative was to orgainse Roadshows jointly with Taj Hotels, across India which were held in major cities across India in late February and early March. The Roadshows were a great success and created hype and buzz among top 120 travel agents, tour operators in each city. Tourism Council of Bhutan is also contemplating organizing a Fam Trip with selected press and media partners, details of which will be shared as they get finalised.
